Project: Metal Awning Restoration

Problem:  There was a saponification reaction (creation of soapy film) on the awning surface between the alkyd paint and the galvanized metal, which had cause the paint to crack and flake off. The metal awning needed to be restored re-surfaced with a new surface coating.

Solution: The only remedy to eliminate the saponification reaction is removal of existing coating. We dry ice blasted the old coating off, scraped and sanded the remaining old coating. We then primed and painted with a coating that would not react with the existing galvanized metal. The blasting was scheduled before opening of the store and the painting took place during weekend hours.
